Communications Apprenticeships for Emergency and Public Services

The JGA Group has a strong track record in helping public sector bodies, local government, NHS, police forces, ambulance services and fire services to develop communications and marketing staff.

Our range of apprenticeships build the knowledge, skills and behaviours to plan and deliver campaigns, engage with stakeholders and citizens and evaluate impact through an ever-increasing range of channels.

We are the official provider of Communications apprenticeships to the Government Communication Service and are the national market leader for this (and several other) apprenticeships.

Much of our provision is within the public sector. More than 45 organisations across central government, local government, blue light and the private sector trust us to train their apprentices.

In addition to our work with the public sector we provide apprenticeships to many media firms such as BBC, C4, News UK and the Guardian.

Developing communications and marketing skills

Our Programmes

The following apprenticeships develop the skills of your communications and marketing teams:

What People Say About Us

Ofsted rates The JGA Group as a good provider. In July 2023 100% of apprentices told us that seminars were excellent or good.

What some of our apprentices say:

“I really enjoyed my apprenticeship and learnt so much about marketing which I have been able to apply in my job. The apprenticeship has helped me to improve my project management skills and write effective marketing plans that align with my organisation’s goals and mission. The apprenticeship has given me a lot of confidence and skills that I can use in my future career.”

Marketing Executive Apprentice, Solent NHS Trust

“I think it would be impossible to learn this in an academic scenario without having hands on work experience. I’ve also learnt things that are outside our sector and I think you probably become better at comms because you have a better knowledge of the wider industry. The sessions have been really enjoyable. My tutor is very knowledgeable. Learning things then being able to apply it to the role is the best part.”

Digital Community Manager Apprentice, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service used a Digital Community Manager apprenticeship to expand the capability of their communications team.

What employers say about us:

“I’ve seen her confidence speaking and presenting in the workplace in both formal and informal settings grow and we have been very impressed with how quickly [she] picks up skills and applies them to her role.”

Delivery Model

JGA’s approach is for a regular full-day or half-day seminars delivered live online to small groups, supplemented by round tables, expert coaching and pastoral support. Our team are skilled professionals in their fields who often continue to work within their specialism.

We work closely to support line managers with planning and organising in-work aspects of apprenticeships to ensure that impact is high.

What Does it Cost and How Can I Order?

For large organisations (with a pay bill of over £3 million) – apprenticeship training can be fully funded by the Apprenticeship Levy. We are on most major public sector procurement frameworks: Crown Commercial Service, Civil Service Apprenticeship Unit (for comms and policy), YPO and many others.

For smaller organisations:

  • The Government funds 95% of the training cost. (This amounts to £10,450 for the PR & Communications apprenticeship, for example).
  • 100% of the costs can be Government funded if your organisation has fewer than 50 employees and you are hiring a 16-18 year old apprentice. (This amounts to £11,000 Government funding for the PR & Communications apprenticeship, for example).
