Keeping Safe Over Summer
Summer is upon us and even though it should be a time to kick back and relax, there are some important things to remember. Use our handy checklist to make this summer one to remember for all the right reasons!
Water and beach safety
- Beach safety – swim only at lifeguarded beaches, learn flag meanings and check tide times beforehand
- Never swim alone – always go with friends and tell someone where you’re going
- Don’t swim after drinking alcohol, and be cautious of inflatables and cold-water shock from low temperatures
- Rivers & lakes carry risks – you may not notice hidden currents and submerged objects. Stick close to shore and avoid unsafe jumps
Sun and heat protection
- Use SPF30+ sunscreen (protects UVA & UVB), reapply every two hours and after swimming; don’t forget ears, neck, feet
- Wear loose, light-coloured clothing, hats, sunglasses and stay in shade between 11 am–3 pm
- Drink plenty of water – aim for frequent sips and carry a reusable bottle to avoid dehydration
- Know signs of heat exhaustion & stroke (e.g. dizziness, nausea, confusion). If symptoms worsen after cooling and hydration, call 999 or local emergency services
Independent travel and personal safety
- Share your plans with friends or family – let them know exactly where you’re going and when you’ll return
- Stick together with friends – avoid walking alone, especially after dark. Use Uber or night buses if needed
- Watch valuables carefully, especially near Tube stations or crowded spots in big cities – avoid displaying phones or bags openly
- Familiarise yourself with your area – ask locals or use apps like ‘Safe Places‘ for help when you feel unsafe
Online safety
- Check your privacy settings on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Enable two-factor authentication
- Think twice before you post – avoid sharing your location, sensitive info, or onscreen maps
- Report and block abusive users, be wary of DMs and unknown links
