Completing your apprenticeship

Gateway to completion

Once you’ve completed your on programme training you will go through gateway to completion. This is where we agree with you and your line manager that you have acquired the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard and are ready to undertake your final assessment.

Apprenticeship assessment

Apprenticeship assessment is the process for you to demonstrate that you have acquired the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSB’s) set out in the apprenticeship standard.

The assessment will be carried out by an impartial Assessment Organisation, which takes responsibility for the assessment of the apprentice against the requirements of their standard.

Your assessment

During your assessment you will complete the following:

You will create an 8,000 word report based on work-based project that you will complete during your apprenticeship. The report will be written after you have gone through gateway, but the project work will be done prior to gateway.

The report content must include all of (but need not be limited to) the following topics:

  • Description of the situation as a system, and its context.
  • Objectives of the work practice on which the project report is based.
  • Chosen methods, methodology(ies) and rationale.
  • Summary of the tasks and responsibilities undertaken by the apprentice.
  • Discussion of challenges and barriers observed and actions taken.

You will also give a presentation based on the Work-based Project Report. This is given to an independent assessor and will be either be face-to-face or via online video conferencing. The assessment will take around 60 minutes, 15 minutes for the presentation and the remainder for Q&A.

The professional discussion lasts for 90 minutes and is a two-way conversation between the Independent Assessor and the apprentice. It will be structured to draw out the best of the apprentice’s competence and cover the KSBs assigned to this assessment method.

To support the conversation, you will create a portfolio of evidence during your apprenticeship. It contains content collated through the course of the apprenticeship and represents real on-the-job work and experience. The portfolio underpins the discussion and is not directly assessed.
