After a trial in 2023 and implementation in 2024, we are pleased to announce the 2025 edition of the West London Film Competition. Media is a strategic sector in West London, yet it is really difficult to get work experience. This is a solution.

In February 2025, participants will work with a professional filmmaker for 5 days, in teams of 10, to conceptualise, plan, script, shoot and edit a short film. The results will be screened at a West London cinema and prizes awarded (they’re super, smashing, great).

The competition is open to West London’s educational institutions and community groups so check it out!

Do you know which roles in film and TV have skills shortages? Despite parts of the sector being well below peak levels of employment, there are roles which are in demand. If we can help fill these then it will create more jobs for everyone in West London’s film & TV industry.

We have put together a list of what employers believe to be in shortage from previous lists published by the BFI and ScreenSkillsUK (thank you to both).

The Greater London Authority is working hard to improve the diversity of creative businesses and has new toolkits to support this objective.

To help them find out more about (micro, small, medium & large) creative businesses status regarding Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), they have posted a survey (28 questions, mostly check box answers) which is linked below.

Do please sign up and take part in this worthwhile exercise.

On Monday 15th July 2024, BOXPARK Wembley was buzzing with over 1,500 people attending the West London Film & TV Skills & Jobs Fest. This event brought together aspiring filmmakers, industry experts, and those considering a career change, all eager to learn and network.

Courtesy of funding from the DfE and Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and with generous sponsorship from SEGRO, JGA learners attended our Production Assistant Skills Bootcamp. From set design to costume design, script writing to hair and makeup, students had the opportunity to get stuck in and develop their skills, under the expert guidance of multi-award winning producer Simon Poon Tip.

Training in West London Film & TV

Creative Executive Naffie Darboe has compiled a list of film and TV training options for West Londoners who want to work in media production and related disciplines.

Much of the training is free as it is funded by the Greater London Authority or Central Government. Some courses are only available commercially, that is, learners pay to study.

The West London provision file also brings you employers and employment agencies specialising in film, TV and related creative jobs.

We also bring you the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Directory for scripted TV and film – thank you Bianca Gavin.

Skills Audit: West London Film & TV

Skills Audit: West London Film & TV

Facilitated by the West London Film & TV Skills Hub and a network of screen focused creative enterprise zones, universities, colleges and training providers in West London are working hard to meet these challenges.

Across the area:

  • West London institutions, including 7 universities, 7 colleges and 8 training and education providers (LAMDA, Global Academy, MAMA Youth Met Film), offer a local solution to crew shortages and skills gaps.
  • Institutions offered 116 screen industry-related programmes in 2020-21, including Film and TV, Production, Animation, Games and VFX, with some institutions’ offerings overlapping. Courses range from Entry level (sub-GCSE equivalent) to Level 7 (Masters), alongside some shorter non-accredited or pre-Level 1 courses, with the majority at Level 6 (undergraduate).
  • Over 1650 students enrolling annually across courses ranging from entry level to post-graduate.
  • Students have access to excellent facilities and equipment, preparing them well for work, including 9 studios, 6 green screen facilities, 4 Motion Capture (Mocap) studios, 3 foley suites (sound effects), 10 recording studios, 1 virtual production studio with 2/3 more being procured.

We will be doing more work to reflect the importance of ‘non-creative’ roles to the sector.
