Spiking

What is Spiking?

When you’re at parties or social events, it’s important to be aware of spiking. This is when someone puts alcohol or drugs into another person’s drink, vape, food, or even directly into their body without their knowledge or permission.

Unfortunately, it does happen so knowing what to look out for can really help keep everyone safe.

Signs someone may have been spiked include:

Suddenly seeming confused or disoriented

Appearing very drunk after only a small amount of alcohol

Vomiting or feeling unwell

Passing out

Experiencing hallucinations or paranoia

Memory loss

Panic or distress

If someone seems much more affected than you’d expect after just one drink, it’s worth paying attention.

What should you do?

Stay with them and don’t leave them alone

Get help from trusted friends, staff, or security

Call 999 if they’re seriously unwell

Keep their drink if possible, as it may help later

Make sure they get medical help quickly

Being there for someone can make a huge difference. Also, remember some common myths aren’t true:

It’s not just women, men can be affected too

You might not always notice a drink has been tampered with

It doesn’t just happen in clubs

Even people you know can make unsafe choices

Being drunk already doesn’t make it “less serious”

Planning ahead

A little preparation can go a long way in keeping you safe. Before heading out:

Know where you’re going

Make sure your phone is fully charged

Share your location with someone you trust

Plan how you’ll get home

Try not to go alone if you can avoid it

While You’re Out

Keep an eye on your drink

Stay with your friends and don’t leave anyone behind

Know where exits and safe spaces are

Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t

Alcohol can affect your judgement, coordination and decision-making, so try to look out for one another. A quick check-in with a friend can really help.

Drugs and party culture

It’s important to understand the risks linked to drugs, including:

Not knowing exactly what you’re taking

Anxiety or panic attacks

Risk of overdose

Increased vulnerability to theft or harm

Mixing drugs and alcohol is especially dangerous. Stay safe by:

Avoiding unknown substances

Not mixing alcohol and drugs

Getting help early if something feels wrong

Looking after friends who may be struggling

Consent and looking out for each other

Consent must always be clear, informed, and ongoing. Someone cannot give consent if they are:

Very intoxicated

Unconscious

Unable to understand what’s happening

Unable to communicate clearly

If something doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. You can help by:

Checking in directly with the person

Distracting or interrupting a situation

Getting friends or others involved

Alerting staff or security

Staying nearby until things feel safe

In an emergency, always call 999 – you won’t be judged, and you could help prevent something serious.

The best way to enjoy your social time is to:

Trust your instincts

Stay aware (not worried)

Look after each other

Ask for help when needed

Speak up early if something feels wrong

Have fun and stay safe over summer!

So what does it actually mean?

The manosphere is not one website, app, blog or forum; it’s a collection of online communities and influencers who often promote:
• Negative views about women
• Harmful ideas about masculinity
• The belief that men are treated unfairly in society

These ideas can sometimes affect how people think about relationships, confidence and identity.

Someone influenced by this content might:
• Use sexist or degrading language
• Make jokes about violence or assault
• Start using extreme terms like “red pill” or “NPC”
• Share harmful content online
• Blame others (especially women) for their problems
• Become overly focused on appearance or body image
• Feel pressure to “prove” masculinity

Why It Matters
Content like this can feel appealing because it:
• Offers a sense of belonging
• Gives simple answers to complex feelings
• Promises confidence or control

But often, it encourages unhealthy attitudes and behaviours that can harm relationships, wellbeing, and future opportunities.

How You Can Support Yourself or Others

Find Positive Role Models
Think about people you respect and why. Good role models:
• Show respect for others
• Handle challenges calmly
• Are open about emotions
• Support others, not put them down

These can be teachers, coaches, public figures or people in your everyday life.

Positive Male Role Models
Here are some people promoting healthy, positive values:
• Stormzy – speaks openly about mental health
• Dave – uses music to explore real-life issues
• Terry Crews – advocates against abuse and stigma
• Ian Wright – supports young people and women’s sport
• Dr Alex George – mental health ambassador
• Joe Wicks – promotes healthy lifestyles
• Stephen Graham – actor, writer and ambassador for healthy relationships between fathers and sons

Talk About Healthy Relationships
It’s important to understand:
• Respect and equality
• Consent
• Managing rejection in a healthy way
• That there are many ways to be a “strong” person

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
We have come a long way, but there’s still stigma around mental health — especially for men.
But asking for support is a strength, not a weakness. If you’re struggling:
• Speak to your tutor or safeguarding lead
• Reach out to someone you trust

Support services such as: Movember, NHS mental health support, Kooth / Qwell, CALM

Turning Real-Life Moments into Conversations
TV shows and social media often show behaviour that can raise questions.
Instead of ignoring it, ask: “What did you think about how they acted?”

Real strength isn’t about dominating others or hiding emotions, it’s about:
✅ self-control
✅ respect
✅ emotional awareness
✅ confidence without putting others down

Antisemitic incidents have increased in the UK and internationally, including attacks on Jewish charities and synagogues. Even if you have not experienced it directly, Jewish classmates, friends and colleagues may be feeling worried, isolated or targeted.

Official data also shows Jewish people experience one of the highest rates of religiously motivated hate crime in the UK. That’s why it matters to understand what antisemitism is, how it can show up (including online) and what you can do if you see it.

What is antisemitism?

Antisemitism is hatred, prejudice or discrimination against Jewish people.

It can be obvious (slurs, threats, vandalism) or subtle (stereotypes, conspiracy myths, “jokes”, exclusion).

It can also show up when Jewish people are treated as responsible for the actions of the Israeli government or are pressured to explain or defend politics they may not agree with.

Why does it feel more visible right now?

Conflict and geopolitical events can trigger spikes in hate and misinformation.

Social media can amplify extreme content and harassment, making it spread quickly.

Confusion about Jewish identity (religion, ethnicity, culture) can lead to stereotypes or scapegoating.

Online safety: spotting and responding to hate

Antisemitism online includes direct abuse, coordinated harassment, coded language, conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial. If you see it:

Don’t pile on or share it (even to criticise) – that can amplify it.

Report it on the platform and save evidence (screenshots/links) if safe to do so.

If it involves threats or a workplace context, escalate using your organisation’s reporting routes and/or the police.

How to support Jewish friends and colleagues (simple things that help)

Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski (July 2024) suggests practical ways to show support:

Check in: a short message like “I’m thinking of you, how are you doing?” can mean a lot.

Listen without interrogating. Avoid asking someone to “explain” Israel or justify anyone’s politics.

Challenge antisemitic comments, stereotypes, or bullying if it’s safe – silence can feel like agreement.

Report incidents through workplace channels and/or appropriate external organisations.

Safety first: only intervene if you can do so without putting yourself or others at risk. If someone may become aggressive, step away and report it instead.

Many Jewish people feel singled out by events they cannot control. Small acts of allyship, done consistently can help people feel safer and less alone.

But why is this practice put in place?

More daylight can help improve mental health: extended daylight hours bring more time in the evenings for outdoor activities, exercise, and socialising after work; it also provides more opportunity for exposure to sunlight which may help reduce symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) – a type of depression linked to reduced sunlight during winter months.

Daylight improves health, mood, alertness, productivity, and sleep by regulating circadian rhythms (the internal clock that regulates sleep-wake cycles, hormone levels, and energy patterns throughout the day) and providing natural visual and psychological stimulation. Morning light in particular signals the brain to increase alertness and helps synchronise the body clock, which enhances daytime performance and supports better sleep at night.

Daylight has a profound effect on mood and mental health – well-lit environments are associated with improved morale, reduced fatigue, and lower stress levels. Bright, naturally lit spaces are usually perceived as more pleasant and uplifting compared to dim or artificial lighting, and this can enhance overall feelings of satisfaction and emotional wellbeing.

Daylight also supports cognitive functions such as memory, alertness, and decision-making, making it beneficial for both work and educational settings, which can also boost productivity and learning.

As well as these mental and emotional benefits, extended daylight brings potential energy and financial savings, with reduced costs of artificial lighting in the evenings, and other benefits such as increased consumer spending in retail, hospitality and tourism sectors and even reduces crime rates – especially theft and vandalism. In healthcare settings, increased natural light has been linked to faster patient recovery and improved overall wellbeing.

So how can you make the most of your additional daylight hours? Here are some ideas:

Sign up for a boot camp: Utilise the lighter morning hours to get up early and start your day energised.

Go for a hike: Take advantage of the longer daylight hours to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or walking – explore your local neighbourhood or go further afield.

Reset your body clock: Use the extra daylight hours to reset your body clock by going to bed earlier and waking up later.

Go outside during your lunch break: Spend some time outdoors during your lunch break to enjoy the sunshine – daylight boosts performance!

Create a cosy evening nook if you have an outdoor space, with solar-powered lights so you can linger outside after sunset. Great for reading outside and practicing evening meditation too!

Start a small container garden—herbs, flowers and vegetables all thrive with more daylight – gardening is great for mental health, and nothing tastes better than something you’ve grown!

Try outdoor dining – upgrade your everyday meals to alfresco dining experiences!

Attend local community events that pop up during British Summer Time. Evening markets, outdoor movies and concerts are often available in Summer.

Practice photography – The famed ‘golden hour’ provides perfect natural lighting for your photos. It’s a wonderful excuse to dabble in photography, capturing your loved ones or some special landscapes bathed in sunset.

Go cycling.

Take up birdwatching.

Take up an evening class, join a new club or play team sports.

Organise an outdoor move night of your own.

So, now we’ve adjusted our clocks, try to remember that with Daylight Saving Time you aren’t losing an hour of sleep – you’re gaining an hour of life! What you choose to do with that time is up to you – but make the most of the benefits that daylight brings!

The episode has highlighted the lack of understanding of Tourette syndrome, and neurodivergence as a whole.

Tourette Syndrome is a genetically determined neurological condition, the key features of which are tics, involuntary and uncontrollable sounds and movements. It is a complex condition and a large number of people with the condition will also experience co-occurring features and conditions.

Key things to know about Tourette Syndrome:

The main symptom of Tourette syndrome is tics. Tics can involve repetitive sounds (vocal tics) or movements (motor tics) you do not choose to make and cannot control.

Tics involving sounds may include: Whistling, sniffing or clearing your throat a lot, making animal sounds, repeating a sound, word or phrase, swearing (this is rare).

Tics involving movement may include: Rolling your eyes or blinking, shrugging your shoulders, jerking or twitching movements, tensing your stomach muscles, jumping.

Tics can be triggered by different things including stress, excitement or tiredness.

Symptoms of Tourette syndrome usually start around the age of 6 and can get more noticeable around age 10.

Studies estimate that up to 1% of children have Tourette Syndrome – that is about the same as those with Autism.

Tourette syndrome affects more than 300 000 adults and children across the UK

Tourette syndrome is more common in boys than girls.

People with Tourette syndrome often have other conditions, such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Deadlines drive behaviour, knowledge sits with a few experienced individuals and new team members are expected to “pick it up as they go.”

While this approach can get submissions out of the door, it often leads to inconsistent quality, over-reliance on key people and a cycle of stress and firefighting.

Over time, this becomes a hidden business risk.

When bid capability is informal, processes vary from bid to bid. Compliance may be rushed, coordination between technical, commercial and operational contributors can feel fragmented, while senior staff often spend valuable time on tasks that could be handled by a well-trained coordinator.

The team delivers, but at a cost to resilience, morale and long-term performance.

Professional disciplines do not rely solely on learning by osmosis. They are supported by clear standards, shared ways of working and intentional development.

This is where the Level 3 Bid & Proposal Coordinator Apprenticeship, delivered by The JGA Group, provides a practical solution.

The apprenticeship offers a funded, work-based route to building core bid capability. It focuses on the skills that often sit at the heart of delivery challenges:

Crucially, the learning is not abstract. Apprentices apply their knowledge directly to live bids, using real trackers, schedules and submissions as evidence of competence.

This approach turns development into performance improvement.

One employer described how their apprentice progressed from a junior team member into a confident bid writer who stepped up during a resource gap:

“Emily is now a fully-fledged Bid Writer filling a shortage we had while our Senior Bid Writer was out of the business. She has brought insight from her apprenticeship into the team and is bringing in ideas that make our bids more customer focused.”

As capability grows, apprentices do not just support bids — they start to lead aspects of delivery. The same manager shared:

“Emily is now organising and leading meetings with more experienced SMEs and extracting the information she needs to write the submission.”

That shift in confidence and professionalism has a direct impact on submission quality:

“We’ve seen improvements in clarity and structure. Responses are more concise and more relatable to the question asked by the buyer.”

The benefits extend beyond writing style. Structured development strengthens how the team operates under pressure:

“The apprenticeship has had a positive impact on our ability to meet deadlines and manage workload — 100%.”

This is the real transformation.

Senior bid professionals are freed to focus on strategy, messaging and client engagement rather than chasing inputs and managing version control. The whole team benefits from clearer structure and shared expectations of what “good” looks like.

Beyond immediate bid performance, the impact is cultural. Providing a recognised development pathway signals that bid and proposal work is a professional discipline, not simply an administrative support function.

This improves engagement, supports retention and helps organisations build a sustainable pipeline of capable work-winning professionals.

Moving from ad-hoc delivery to structured capability is not about adding bureaucracy. It is about reducing risk, improving consistency and creating the conditions where people can perform at their best.

In competitive markets, that shift can turn a stretched bid team into a genuine organisational advantage.

Because winning work consistently is not just about what you write, it is about the capability of the team behind every submission.

Nationwide surveys show that over half of UK employers report skills shortages, while investment in workplace training is at its lowest level in over a decade. Only 59% of employers provided training in 2024, despite persistent gaps in essential capabilities and increasing pressure on staff workloads.

This makes structured development routes like the Level 3 Bid & Proposal Coordinator Apprenticeship at The JGA Group not just helpful, but essential for organisations aiming to build resilient, future-ready bid teams.

About the author: Angela Denise is a Tutor and Skills Coach at The JGA Group, where she supports apprentices and employers across sales and bid coordination programmes, helping teams develop the professional skills needed to deliver high-quality bids and proposals.

On Tuesday 3rd February, Fastrack rolled into the JGA Group’s ‘Healthier Futures’ 16-18 provision in Dartford for an inspiring and interactive careers talk designed to open doors into engineering, clean transport, and apprenticeship pathways. From 1:00–2:30 PM, learners explored what it really takes to keep a fleet of buses running smoothly and how they could become part of that journey.

Engineering the Future

Led by Fastrack’s Head of Service, Isobel Hedley-Jones, alongside an experienced driver/engineer, the session went far beyond a typical presentation. Students heard first-hand accounts of life in the industry, from maintaining cutting-edge clean-fuelling buses to responding to real-time technical challenges on the road.

The focus was clear: engineering is not just a job, it’s a career with momentum

Objectives in Action

The session aimed to:

Raise awareness of engineering and transport careers in Kent

Highlight accessible entry routes for school leavers

Provide real-world insight from industry professionals

Encourage questions, curiosity, and confidence in career planning

By the end of the afternoon, learners had a clearer understanding of how technical skills translate into meaningful work and how industries like transport are evolving through clean energy and innovation.

Taking the Wheel

This wasn’t just another careers talk. It was a reminder that opportunity can arrive right outside your door…sometimes quite literally.

With apprenticeship pathways opening in September and growing demand for skilled engineers in sustainable transport, Fastrack’s visit showed that the fast lane to success isn’t reserved for a select few.

For many students in Dartford that day, the journey towards a future in engineering may well have started the moment they stepped on board.

The session formed part of JGA’s wider support for learners on the 16–18 ‘Healthier Futures’, an alternative to school and college which helps young people build the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment, apprenticeships or further education. Through employability training, industry insight sessions and work-related learning opportunities, the programme supports learners in exploring career pathways and planning their next steps.
