What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a great way to gain valuable work experience, earn a salary and achieve a recognised qualification at the same time. It’s designed to help you grow and progress in your career. It works a little differently from traditional study routes, as you’ll learn while working in a real job with the support of your employer.

Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of industries, from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE level) through to degree and postgraduate level. You’ll learn through a combination of on-the-job experience and structured training, helping you develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to succeed in your role. You’ll balance work with training and independent learning, so being organised and committed will help you get the most from the experience.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll complete learning activities and regular reviews to track your progress and support your development. At the end of the programme, you’ll take an End-Point Assessment (EPA), which may result in a Pass, Merit or Distinction, depending on the apprenticeship standard. Successfully completing an apprenticeship can open the door to career progression, further study and exciting new opportunities.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll be supported by your employer and a dedicated JGA tutor or coach. You’ll benefit from regular progress reviews, learning resources, assessment guidance, and tailored support to help you develop your skills and confidence.

If you don’t already have GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or above, we can support you to achieve Functional Skills qualifications where required. For apprentices aged 16-18, this is a mandatory part of the programme. Support may also be available for learners aged 19 and over, where appropriate.

Starting an apprenticeship

To begin an apprenticeship, you must be employed in a suitable role and have your employer’s agreement to support your training.

JGA is a training provider and does not place candidates directly into roles; however, we can provide guidance on where to search for apprenticeship opportunities.
