Functional Skills

What are Functional Skills?

Each Apprenticeship standard requires you to hold a certificate to at least a Level 2 in Maths and English. If you do not have copies of your certificates, or if they are not held on the learner record service, then you will need to undertake the Functional Skills course. This does not form part of your off-the-job training. The Functional Skills course runs for 12 weeks.

How are Functional Skills delivered?

Session are 1 ½ hours long and delivered weekly via Zoom with a specialist tutor. You will be set work to do each week and once all the sessions are complete you will sit a mock exam. If you pass this then you will be entered for your exam and the details will be discussed with you on an individual basis.

If you need some further practice, then you will work on a focused revision plan with your tutor until you feel ready to sit the exam. You will not be able to enter Gateway until you have passed your Functional Skills.

Useful Resources: Maths

In addition to Skills Forward, we recommend looking at Corbettmaths too. It’s completely free and a really good way to build and test your skills. It’s aimed at GCSE, but the skills are the same. The worksheets are linked with really good videos and once you have worked through them, you can click on the answers to see how you get on.

There is also this website, which is mostly free to access, so would be worth exploring:

Finally, the BBC have recently created a Bitesize revision site for Functional Skills which might be worth looking at too:
