How an Apprenticeship Helped Salman Transform His Career
Salman’s search for growth began after he dabbled in freelance web design and social media marketing. His experience was self-taught, but he felt the need for a structured learning path.
“I wanted to take my skills to the next level,” Salman recalls. “I wanted a qualification and the hands-on experience that could only come from an apprenticeship.” Through the government apprenticeship website, Salman found his perfect match in the JGA Marketing programme while working at the Nuclear Institute.
Mentorship and growth at JGA
Salman attributes much of his success to the mentorship he received from his tutor Scott Goodacre and coach Anthony Milner, who helped him refine his marketing skills. “Scott’s lectures were incredibly insightful,” says Salman. “He taught me how to develop marketing strategies and think critically about branding. His advice on applying these skills within an organisation was invaluable.” Anthony Milner, his coach, guided him through the more practical elements of his apprenticeship, from project reports to setting goals. “Anthony really helped me focus. I would submit drafts of my project reports and his feedback pushed me to improve. His support was crucial.”
Applying new skills in real-time
The apprenticeship aligned perfectly with his work at the Nuclear Institute, especially during a significant brand transition project. “The organisation was going through a rebrand and my apprenticeship lessons were so timely. I was able to apply what I was learning in real-time,” Salman explains. The combination of branding insights and practical skills like SEO and web design empowered him to make significant contributions. “The apprenticeship gave me the confidence to take on more responsibility. By the end of my time there, I was handling projects independently, working directly with stakeholders. It was a major shift from when I started.”
The supportive environment at The JGA Group was critical to his growth. “The team at JGA were amazing. Paula, my Learning Progress Advisor, kept in regular contact to ensure I stayed on track. She set targets for me and checked in to make sure I was meeting them. JGA really felt like a community I wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance.” He adds, “When I first started, I was so nervous. It was overwhelming. But thanks to the support from Scott, Anthony and Paula, I felt welcomed and encouraged at every step.”
A new chapter: Project management at McBains
Looking ahead, Salman envisions a bright future. “In the next five to six years, I aim to become a Chartered Project Manager and possibly move into a leadership role, maybe even as a CMO. The apprenticeship has given me the foundation to dream big and work towards those goals.”
Salman’s story is proof that with the right apprenticeship, hard work and the support of dedicated mentors, you can transform your career. “I’ll always be grateful to JGA for giving me this opportunity. I’m looking forward to staying connected with them and giving back, perhaps by mentoring future apprentices.”
