What will happen once my member of staff begins an NVQ?
Once your member of staff is signed up with the JGA Group, they will be invited to attend a one day introductory workshop at our Eastcote offices, or if possible in the learners locallity.
The candidate will then be contacted by their assessor who will arrange to meet them in their normal place of work. The assessor will explain about the NVQ and the assessment process in more detail.
Throughout the course of the NVQ, the assessor will assess the candidates work against the NVQ standards. They will also give guidance and support.
In addition to the regular meetings, some NVQs include one day workshops, which address specific topics. These are held once every six to eight weeks, and are designed to help with the background knowledge for the qualification. They also give candidates the opportunity to meet other people taking the same course.
Back To TopWhat will my member of staff need to do?
Some of the things your member of staff might be asked to do are:
- Write short reports explaining, for instance, a problem with which they have dealt
- Collect documents that they have written or wish to use as evidence
- Ask a manager, colleague or customer to write a short statement confirming how the candidate did an aspect of their job - called a Witness Statement
- Take photographs to illustrate an aspect of their job.
- Observe them carrying out their job
- Ask questions and discuss situations that have happened at work and how they dealt with them
- Speak to supervisors or managers
- Look at work they have produced and records they have used
The NVQ Centre will send you regular updates on the progress made by your staff.
Back To TopHow can I help my member of staff?
Most NVQs take between six and twelve months to complete. So one of the most important things you can do is to help keep your staff motivated. You can do this by showing an interest in how they are getting on and supporting and encouraging them.
The following will also prove extremely helpful in ensuring that they complete their NVQ on time:
- Allowing them time off to attend the introductory and subsequent workshops
- Ensuring that they are able to meet with their assessor once a month in a quiet place with no interruptions, and on some occasions to allow the assessor to observe the candidate carrying out their normal activities
- Help them to choose units which will be most appropriate for their development
- Give them some time at work to complete and organise their portfolio
- Provide Witness Statements if asked
