An Introduction to the JGA Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care
The JGA Apprenticeship is available to working adults of all ages. It is free for most people, funded by the Government’s Skills Funding Agency, subject to conditions.
What is a JGA Apprenticeship?
At the core of the JGA Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care are the knowledge and skills required for working in care. It is like the NVQ, but with more training in knowledge and skills, taking the Apprentice to the required level of ability to do their job.
The JGA Apprenticeship includes training to improve the Apprentices’ English and Maths, if they need it. This takes their literacy and numeracy to the Apprenticeship levels.
JGA Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care are available at Levels 2 and 3.
How does it work?
Before the JGA Apprenticeship starts, we assess the candidate to see what level they are at. This is, first, to make sure they will be able to cope with the training; second, to see what training they will need during the Apprenticeship to reach the required level in both their ability to care and their English and Maths.
Our aim is to keep to a minimum the time spent away from work. There is an Induction Workshop and more workshops during the programme, which require attendance at our Vocational Qualifications Centre or at one of a number of London venues.
For the majority of the training, we use ‘blended learning’, a mix of face-to-face sessions and e-learning, which is more effective and efficient. The candidate will need access to a computer and/or the internet, though not necessarily in the workplace.
How long does it take?
The JGA Apprenticeship covers more than an NVQ and so it takes a little longer. A JGA Apprenticeship at Level 2 takes nine to twelve months; at Level 3 eighteen to twenty four.
Who can apply?
Anyone is eligible if they are 16 or over and in paid work in a relevant role for 16 hours a week or more, unless they already have a qualification above a Level 3, e.g. a degree. Also, citizenship, residence and visa status conditions apply to the Skills Funding Agency funding.
What does it cost?
At present, a JGA Apprenticeship is free, whatever the apprentice’s age, except those 25 and over working for a company with more than 1,000 employees.
Why partner with JGA?
The JGA Group has an impressive track record of providing NVQs in Health and Social Care at Levels 2, 3 and 4 and training in Literacy and Numeracy for Adults at all levels of ability.
